A special kind of magic happens when food connects us to our past. In Belmont, North Carolina, one restaurant has turned that connection into a full-fledged celebration of family, tradition, and Southern hospitality. Nellie's Southern Kitchen isn't just a place to eat—it's a story served on a plate, and at the heart of that story is a beloved Southern staple: pimento cheese.

The Legacy Behind Nellie’s Southern Kitchen

Nellie's Southern Kitchen was born out of love, legacy, and a deep appreciation for home-cooked meals. The restaurant was founded by Kevin and Denise Jonas, parents of the pop-singing Jonas Brothers trio—Kevin, Joe, and Nick—as a tribute to Kevin Sr.'s late grandmother, Nellie. A hardworking woman from Belmont's textile mill era, Nellie spent her life feeding and nurturing those around her. Her recipes were simple but packed with heart, and they remain the inspiration behind many of the dishes on the menu today.

Stepping into Nellie's Southern Kitchen feels like walking into a family gathering, complete with warm smiles, live music, and hearty Southern cooking. The atmosphere is a mix of rustic charm and modern elegance, making it the perfect setting for locals and visitors alike to experience true Southern hospitality.

A stunning oil painting of Nellie herself hangs proudly in the restaurant, depicting her as she worked in textiles, with cotton in her hair like a crown of jewels and her beloved dog Monkey by her side. In the background, a church stands as a symbol of her faith, while spools of cotton surround her, highlighting the connection to the life she lived.

A reverence for nature and family is reflected throughout the restaurant, from the bird chandeliers to the tree trunks that serve as table bases and the unique horse-leg table in the bar area—each detail a tribute to the beauty that was central to Nellie's world.

Pimento Cheese: The Taste of Southern Hospitality

We'd like to thank Nellie's Southern Kitchen for sharing one of their popular recipes that truly embodies Southern hospitality: pimento cheese—a staple of Southern comfort food with deep roots in Southern cuisine.

But why does pimento cheese hold such a special place in the Southern culinary tradition? It's more than just a dip—it's history, it's comfort, and it's community. Originally crafted as an affordable yet flavorful spread, pimento cheese became a household favorite across the South, passed down through generations with slight tweaks and variations. It's a symbol of the resourcefulness and creativity that defines Southern cooking—turning simple ingredients into something extraordinary.

Chef Keith Lee explains that what makes their pimento cheese so beloved is its luxurious creaminess, served with fresh vegetables and parmesan toast points. It's the perfect introduction to the flavors that define Nellie's menu. For another true Southern classic, Chef Lee also recommends Mr. Jonas’ favorite menu item, Chicken and Dumplings—a dish filled with warmth and nostalgia, just like the ones Nellie used to make.

Local Favorite: Grindstaff recommends trying their pimento cheese served over crispy fries for an indulgent twist on this Southern classic.

Nellie's Southern Kitchen isn't just about great food—it's about bringing people together. The restaurant lives by the motto, "We put the host in hospitality," as General Manager Jackie Grindstaff shared.

More Than Just a Meal: The Nellie’s Experience

With live music, special events, and a commitment to being an active part of the Belmont community, Nellie's is more than a restaurant—it's a destination. They regularly participate in town events, often featuring unique themed recipes that give diners a reason to return.

Beyond its famous pimento cheese, the menu offers a mix of classic and reimagined Southern dishes. From crispy fried chicken and house-made biscuits to shrimp and grits that melt in your mouth, each dish is crafted with the same care and attention that Nellie herself would have put into a Sunday supper. And for those with a sweet tooth, don't leave without trying the banana pudding—Grandma Nellie's favorite.

The upstairs outdoor patio is open seasonally, offering guests a perfect spot to enjoy their meal in the fresh Carolina air. Be sure to check out the Hall of Fame wall in the back, showcasing the Jonas family legacy and their deep connection to Belmont.
