Whiskey Mill Bar & Grill
in Bessemer City
As you leave the downtown strip of Bessemer City and pass under the railroad bridge, you'll spot The Whiskey Mill, a charming bar and grill creatively named by owner Michael Croft. Inspired by his great love of whiskey and a desire to honor the once-thriving mills that built the area, Michael has created a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. Like the famous sitcom Cheers, where everyone knows your name, The Whiskey Mill fosters a friendly atmosphere. If a regular has been out for a while, you can bet someone will check up to see if they're alright.
The Whiskey
Black Jack Burger
Whiskey Mill uses 100% Certified Angus Beef in all its burgers. But, what makes the Black Jack Burger unique and irresistible is the Black Label Jack Daniels and the homemade seasoning added while cooking, which caramelizes the meat, creating a mouth-watering flavor. Then, they top it with their famous Black Jack sauce, Swiss cheese, and mayo. It's simply the best!
Da Big Nasty
Da Big Nasty is a unique creation that satisfies the heartiest appetites. This colossal burger boasts four half-pound juicy patties, each topped with a hard-fried egg and loaded with everything on the prep table: bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, cheese, chili, coleslaw, mustard, ketchup, and mayo. To make it an utterly indulgent meal, they surround it with a generous helping of either fries or crispy tater tots. Da Big Nasty isn't just a burger—it's a feast!
The Wings
Their menu includes more than burgers, like sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and a full bar. However, Michael recommended trying their fresh, never-frozen JUMBO wings! Continuing the whiskey theme, The "Whiskey Dry or Red" features a secret homemade dry rub. In contrast, the "Whiskey Gold" delights the palate with a unique sauce that hits sweet, sour, and slightly spicy notes. For those who prefer heat, the "Whiskey Wet" is made with a mildly spicy yet flavorful sauce, topped with Whiskey Mill dry seasoning. These are a must-try and a testament to Whiskey Mill's offerings.
Humble Beginnings
Beginning as a motorcycle shop inside a retired U.S. Post Office, Michael's shop quickly became a gathering spot for friends. After hours, Michael would pull out his grill and cook for everyone. The food and socializing were so successful that Michael and his business partner, Eddie, decided to convert it into a bar and grill. Serving the long-tested burgers and wings his friends have grown to love, its success has been phenomenal, leading to the opening of a second location on New Hope Road in Gastonia.
Best Seat in the House
A unique piece of history — is a custom-made Swept-Wing '57 Dodge booth crafted from a vehicle Michael's parents, Helen and Glenn, once owned. This booth was used for years at Jiggers, another local establishment, before closing in the 80s. Michael lovingly restored it as an anniversary gift to his parents.
As a local who frequents The Whiskey Mill with my husband, this seat is our preferred spot. We can sit close together while enjoying our burgers and wings.
Refreshment with a Kick
The Bar at Whiskey Mill's endless drink options cater to every taste, making it a haven for beverage enthusiasts. Among the extensive selection, the local favorite yet to be added to the menu stands out: the Jida Rite, a unique margarita with no sour mix created to honor owner Michael Croft's lovely wife, Jessica. This refreshing drink captures the bar's spirit—innovative, delightful, and made with love.
