National Travel and Tourism Week 2024

May 19-25, 2024

Celebrate National Tourism Week in Gaston County!

Get ready to join the celebration as Gaston County, our vibrant community, unites in the spirit of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) from May 19-25, 2024! The Board of Commissioners have officially proclaimed this week in honor of the significant impact tourism has on our local economy and community. This year, we're inviting everyone, from residents to businesses, to our welcome centers on Thursday and Friday to partake in the festivities and learn more about how tourism enriches Gaston County.

It's a time to celebrate and recognize the essential role of travel in stimulating economic growth by creating job opportunities, inspiring business development, and elevating the quality of life daily. Established in 1983, National Travel and Tourism Week shines a spotlight on the contributions of the U.S. travel industry and underscores the vital importance to our nation's success.

"It's a week dedicated to showcasing the impact of travel and tourism, and we're excited to be a part of it in Gaston County." said Michael Applegate, director of Gaston County Tourism Development.

"In Gaston County, the power of travel has consistently driven our economy and workforce. In 2022 alone, travelers spent an impressive $336 million here, supporting 2,200 jobs and contributing to an $81 million payroll. These economic benefits extend to state and local governments as well, generating $22 million in tax revenue to support essential services and programs. But it's not just about the numbers. Tourism also brings cultural diversity, new experiences, and a sense of pride to our community. It's an opportunity for local businesses to thrive and for residents to enjoy the benefits of a vibrant economy. Tourism is everyone's business, and we invite you to be a part of it."

"Garnering travel from domestic and international markets, the travel industry helps move the needle to a more prosperous future, benefiting various sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and agriculture that rely on travel to generate business, spur innovation, and support education. But it's not just about the economic impact. The travel industry also supports local events, attractions, and cultural initiatives that make Gaston County a great place to live and visit. By supporting the travel industry, we are not just driving economic growth, but also building vibrant communities that thrive on diversity and cultural exchange."

As we celebrate NTTW, let's recognize the power of the travel industry. It unites people, benefits society, and enhances the United States' global competitiveness. By elevating the industry's perceived value among policymakers, opinion leaders, and business leaders, we can ensure continued growth within the tourism industry.

To celebrate, we will partner with our N.C. State Welcome Centers on I-77 in Charlotte and I-85 in Kings Mountain on Thursday, May 23rd, and Friday, May 24th, respectively. We invite you to join us at these welcome centers to celebrate and learn more about the impact of tourism on Gaston County.

Join us, your Gaston County community, in celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week! Visit our welcome centers on Thursday and Friday to partake in the festivities and discover how tourism enriches our community. Let's come together to honor and support the travel industry, which is crucial in driving economic growth and building vibrant communities. See you there!
