Embrace the Outdoors: Celebrate National Trails Day 2024 in Gaston County

National Trails Day, established by the American Hiking Society (AHS), is an annual celebration on the first Saturday in June. Founded by AHS, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting hiking trails and outdoor recreational spaces in the United States, this event aims to inspire individuals to explore and appreciate the beauty of trails while advocating for their preservation and conservation. Since its inception in 1993, National Trails Day has evolved into a highly anticipated occasion, drawing thousands of nationwide participants. In Gaston County and its surrounding areas, Carolina Thread Trail has pulled togethers numerous events to encourage people to embrace the outdoors and make the most of this special day.

National Trail Day Big Foot Edition

What could be more fun than spending an evening searching for Bigfoot on the trails at George Poston Park? Keep an eye out for Bigfoot as he makes several “surprise” appearances around the park! The bigfoot family smartphone scavenger hunt will take you around the park solving puzzles and completing challenges with your family. Be prepared for anything! This will be a fun challenge for the whole family.

Come join the Carolina Thread Trail for a National Trails Day hike at Poston Park to get a sneak peek into the Spencer Mountain and Poston Park trail projects! While enjoying a moderate walk, you will have the opportunity to learn the latest details about some of the most exciting new trails coming to the Charlotte region! You will also get to see firsthand where some of these trails will be located.

Volunteer Trail Day

Crowders Mountain State Park

June 1, 2024 | 8:30 am - noon

108 Van Dyke Road, Kings Mountain, NC


National Trails Day at Crowders Mountain State Park is a special volunteer work day. Meet at Location Pending at 8:30 a.m. for refreshments, fellowship, and meet the trail crew leaders. Volunteers will be divided into crews and do trail maintenance until 12 noon. Water, snacks, work gloves, safety glasses, insect repellant, and tools will be provided. Dress appropriately for outdoor work and bring any necessary medications. Trail work volunteers will be treated to lunch after the workday by the Friends of Crowders Mountain, Inc. Interested folks are invited to attend the FOCM, Inc. Board meeting at 1 p.m.

Guided Backcountry Hikes

Kings Mountain National Military Park

June 1, 2024 | 3 pm - 5 pm

Rangers and Staff from Carolina Thread Trail will lead a moderate 3.5-mile hike on a section of the future Overmountain Victory Trail. Learn from Thread Trail staff about a new trail project that will connect Kings Mountain National Military Park to Gaffney, SC and beyond. Meet at Kings Mountain National Military Park Visitor Center. All ages welcome. The trail is not accommodating to people with mobility limitations or strollers.


Paws & Perennials Plant Palooza

at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

June 1, 2024 | 10 am - 2 pm

South New Hope Road, Belmont, NC, USA


A day of plants and pups in the Garden Store Courtyard. Pick up a few plant babies for yourself at our plant sale that will feature a range of botanical treasures, perfect for both seasoned gardeners and budding enthusiasts alike. Walk the trails and shop the vendor market to support local artisans offering an eclectic mix of nature-inspired goods and creations. Grab a coffee or a treat from a food truck.
