Gaston County's mild climate with regular daytime highs in the 70s, makes for a great winter getaway. It's easy to get outside and enjoy all the activities the area has to offer. Here are several ways to make the most of the winter.

Visit a five-story glass tropical home

Warm up in a tropical wonderland. An 8,000-square-foot glass conservatory is home to multi-colored orchids and tropical plants. The Orchid Conservatory at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is open once again for the delight of visitors. During your visit, include a winter hike on the nature trail along the banks of Lake Wylie. This time of year offers the best views.

Test your ice skating abilities

For a third year US National Whitewater Center transforms their whitewater rivers into an ice trail. This attraction has been so popular they not only increased the size of the trail but also included, A Snowball’s Chance Skate Race.

Take the plunge thrill seekers

Brave the cold with a 5k and 10k trail race followed by a plunge into cold water at the Frigid Trail Race Plunge. Other activities for thrill seekers include long ziplines, challenging rope courses, climbing, jumps, and more at the US National Whitewater Center. Most all land activities are open on the weekends through the winter, depending on weather.

Fun for the kiddos

Slide on over to The Schiele to enjoy the beauty of a Winter Wonderland without the cold! Kick off your shoes and test your “skating” skills on an indoor rink where socks replace skates. This is a great way for the kiddos (ages 11 and under) to expend some energy this winter and get out of the house!
