View a unique quilt steeped in Black history
Gastonia's African American Museum of History and Culture unveiled a Black history quilt and coloring book for a Black History Month program this month. This quilt showcases the pioneers in Gaston County and was made by the African American Quilt Guild of Gaston County. Along with quilt is a teaching guide that explains every photo on the quilt.
Excellence in the arts
Explore the current exhibits: Peoples, Places & Promises the Artwork of James Converse Biggers, Jr., SACRED GEOMETRY: The Biggers Immersive, and SHUT IN to experience and appreciate the art of local black artists. Just a few examples the Gaston County Museum has of the amazing artwork you can enjoy while honoring and celebrating Black History Month 2022.
Celebrate with a good book
The Gaston County Public Library highlights some great books in celebration of Black History Month. Find titles such as; Fun Age by Kiley Reid, Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, Cicely Tyson’s Just As I Am, You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson, and Year of Yes by the Queen of Shondaland/our TV screens, Shonda Rhimes. With so many great books to read, what are you waiting for? Make your way to the Gaston County Public Library in Gastonia.
The taste of passion
Check out Smith's Soul Food, recently re-opened after a fresh makeover with Chef Robert Irvine of Restaurant Impossible. The Owner Cheryl Littlejohn, recently featured in Gaston Lifestyle's Magazine, believes food is passion and purpose. Take some time to check out Smith's Soul Food Bistro in Gastonia. Draw inspiration from Brandon Bellamy, the only Black majority owner at any level of professional baseball. The Gastonia Honey Hunters is in the Atlantic League, the highest level of professional baseball other than Major League Baseball. Get your tickets now to cheer for the Honey Hunters, opening for their second season on April 21st at Caromont Health Park in Gastonia.
