Black Folks Camp Too in Gaston County

Gaston County, known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities, is taking a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in its outdoor industry. Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black people in outdoor spaces, Gaston County Tourism has partnered with Black Folks Camp Too, a marketing-driven business that aims to make camping more accessible and enjoyable for Black individuals. This collaboration aims to remove barriers, foster diversity, and unify the outdoor community in Gaston County. Let's delve into the importance of this partnership and the anticipated benefits for both residents and visitors.


Per the National Health Foundation, Breaking Down the Lack of Diversity in Outdoor Spaces 2020 Statistics reveal a glaring lack of diversity in national forests, wildlife refuges, and parks across the United States. While people of color constitute almost 40 percent of the country's population, nearly 70 percent of visitors to these outdoor spaces are white. Within this context, Black individuals remain the most underrepresented group. These disparities highlight the urgency of addressing the issue and creating an environment that welcomes people from all backgrounds.


In alignment with the Gaston County Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Gaston County Tourism is dedicated to fostering an equitable environment for all residents and employees. Our joint mission is to create a respectful and inclusive space, irrespective of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or socio-economic status. As part of our efforts, Gaston County Tourism aims to optimize brand experiences, drive visitation, and stimulate economic growth.


Shared objectives and a common mission have been the driving force for a new the partnership between Gaston County Tourism and Black Folks Camp Too.


By collaborating with Black Folks Camp Too, Gaston County aims to learn effective strategies to eliminate fear, invite diversity, and unify the outdoor industry. The initial interaction between the two organizations took place in 2021 when Black Folks Camp Too was invited to Crowders Mountain. With an official partnership, Gaston County proudly displays the Unity Blaze, symbolizing its commitment to unity and inclusivity.


Black Folks Camp Too, founded in 2019, is a marketing-driven business focused on increasing diversity in the outdoor industry. They strive to make camping more appealing and accessible for Black individuals by providing safety education, creating diverse career pathways, and fostering unity within the outdoor community. Through its digital education initiatives, culturally relevant marketing, community engagements, and corporate training, Black Folks Camp Too has promoted local and national unity and diversity.

The partnership between Gaston County Tourism and Black Folks Camp Too holds numerous benefits for the county and its residents. Immediate gains include learning from Black Folks Camp Too's expertise in promoting diversity and inclusion while addressing safety concerns that may deter individuals from engaging in outdoor activities. By embracing the Unity Blaze, Gaston County hopes to send a powerful message of inclusivity, encouraging individuals from all walks of life to feel welcome in their outdoor spaces.

Gaston County proudly showcases the Unity Blaze emblem from Black Folks Camp Too (BFCT), symbolizing unity within the outdoor community and beyond. The centerpiece of the logo, the campfire, represents the idea of treating everyone equally, regardless of race, age, or gender. It signifies that we all have a voice to be heard around the campfire. By embracing the Unity Blaze, individuals and businesses proudly declare their invitation and welcome to all, demonstrating their commitment to inclusivity and equality.


The partnership between Gaston County Tourism and Black Folks Camp Too represents a significant step towards unity and inclusivity in Gaston County's outdoor industry. By addressing the lack of diversity in outdoor spaces and promoting a welcoming environment for all, this collaboration strives to create lasting change.
