Exploring Hidden Gems: Trip Tips from Michael Applegate, Director of Gaston County Tourism Development

Updated: Jul 27

In this exclusive interview with Outdoor NC, we bring you expert trip tips from Michael Applegate, the Director of Gaston County Tourism Development. Michael shares his insights on the often-overlooked treasures and unique experiences that make Gaston County a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Learn about the best seasons to visit, essential preparations, and hidden gems that will enhance your adventure in this North Carolina gem.

  • Most over looked area to recreate? South Fork of the Catawba River

  • What’s your favorite season to recreate in NC and why? Winter because it is peaceful and the water is still. However, it the weather is typically warm enough most days to be on the water. This time of year is also when you’re most likely to spot an eagle nesting near bodies of water.

  • What level of experience is needed to recreate in this area? You don’t need any experience. One of our outfitters will set you up and take great care of you regardless of your experience level.

  • How long should you plan on visiting the area? A two night stay here is the perfect weekend getaway.

  • What sets the area apart from other destinations? Gaston County has a wonderful and enjoyable mix of land and water outdoor activities; hike, bike, paddle, climb until your heart’s content

  • What is unique about the facilities and infrastructure of the area? What I find most unique is the free access and numerous points of access we have for the public to get out into nature.

  • How do you plan ahead and prepare for your recreational activity? I always check the weather a few days out and make any reservations for equipment rentals or guided tours in advance. Then I develop a plan for my pre and post outdoor activities whether it’s grabbing breakfast beforehand or lunch and drinks afterward.

  • What piece of outdoor equipment is your must have? I love my YOLO Hammerhead SUP board which I obtained used from Anchored Soul.

  • How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave no trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity? To leave the environment as you’ve found it. Everything I take out onto the water, I bring back off of the water.

  • Favorite place to visit before or after an outdoor adventure for a meal/coffee/or another beverage? McAdenville and Cramerton have great access to the river and multiple food and beverage options just steps from put in/take out points. Paddle-able downtowns if you will! Terra Mia in McAdenville and Mayworth’s Public House in Cramerton are my “go tos”.

  • Share a unique place to stay in the area. Why would you recommend these accommodations?   The Villa at Water’s Edge in Belmont is a special lodging experience. This Air BNB rental comes equipped with private river access many different water toys.

  • Other overlooked and under visited locations in the area to see while in town? Either of Gaston County’s two marinas along the Catawba River. Riverside Marina in Belmont and/or Tailrace Marina in Mount Holly both offer fantastic river access and equipment for rent.

  • What is your ‘can’t miss experience’ in the area? Christmas Town USA. Everyone should see it at least once.

  • Insider tip! Definitely park at Tuckaseege Park in Mount Holly and take the 1.5 mile walk or bike ride along the A&E Riverfront Trail into downtown Mount Holly to enjoy Traust Brewing Co. Another suggestion is to rent flatwater paddle equipment at the Whitewater Center and make your way across the river for lunch on the deck at J.R. Cash’s Grille & Bar in Mount Holly.
