The Old-Fashioned Way: The Tony’s Ice Cream Story

Time:

For over a century, Tony’s Ice Cream has been more than just a place to grab a cone—it’s been a beloved institution and gathering spot for generations of Gaston County families. Now, the story behind this iconic yellow brick building on East Franklin Boulevard is coming to life in a new exhibit, “The Old-Fashioned Way”: The Tony’s Ice Cream Story, opening March 8 at the Gaston County Museum.

Running through July 2026, the exhibit traces the rich history of Tony’s Ice Cream, from its humble beginnings to its status as a community landmark. It’s a story of immigration, family, and entrepreneurship—how the Coletta and Jannetta families journeyed from Italy and Scotland to Gaston County, blending hard work, innovation, and tradition to build a thriving business in the heart of a growing North Carolina town.

“Everyone has a favorite memory of Tony’s,” says Museum Director Alexandrea Pizza. “But behind those memories is a family whose dedication and resilience created an enduring American success story.”

Visitors to the exhibit can watch a documentary detailing the family’s journey to America, explore the significance of the classic ice cream scoop, and reminisce about their own Tony’s experiences—all while celebrating a business that has become part of Gaston County’s identity.
